Iningai

I grew up on Iningai country. The Iningai (Yiningayi) are the indigenous people of the present-day Longreach region in Queensland. Their traditional land encompasses a territory of over 50,000 km2, stretching east to Barcaldine and north to Aramac and Muttaburra. This is the area I have always considered home.

When the gallery director came over and explained more about the painting – that it was about women’s business – he was reminded of his grandmother’s stories and his connection with the piece grew even stronger. “It was like seeing a piece of me in the mirror that I hadn’t seen before,” he says. “That’s when I decided I wanted to paint.”
